so...i was looking through the lj [livejournal.com profile] bakery community, and someone was talking about macaroons (the meringue type, not the coconut type). they had made a mistake in baking them (and mixing them...and everything else), and that got me to looking back. i want to bake again. i miss it a lot. only thing is...now i have no where to send them/take them/sell them. now we all know that i can't sell them to anyone because they are (a) made in my home, and (b) i dont have a seller's permit...not to mention all the stuff that goes along with owning a bakery. so...where could i take them? i know there's a baycon BBQ coming up, and i *could* do a bunch of baking for that. but that's not for another week or more. i want to do some baking now. i wonder if i could bring them to the catholic worker house? maybe they will take them as long as i have an ingredients list with it? i dunno. all i know is i want to bake something.

**sigh**

Could you give them to your niece's teachers? It's the end of the year and there would be a great nomming, I am sure. Teachers love baked goods.

I'm confused, my macaroons are like a meringue with coconut lol
If you feel like baking I'll soon have the shop open if you have the urge ;)

The macaroons I made at school had almond powder mixed with powdered sugar. The coconut macaroons I remember were more like a drop cookie...like a sugar cookie with coconut.

I guess I've only done the drop ones but my tube of almond paste has a recipe for almond macaroons, never knew those existed lol

Yep yep! When I was in plated deserts, we were told we were going to learn how to make macaroons. I almost ran out of the room 'cos I hate coconut *that* much. Then he told us it was going to be with almond meal. I was ok with that.

I work in Foster City & would gladly feed them to my co-workers. I'd eat a bunch myself if you made something vegan... it's a challenge, right? You like challenges, right? :)

So I know I can sub water for milk and applesauce for eggs, but what do I sub for butter? Can I use butter-flavored shortening?

butter flavor shortening usually has some dairy. I usually use Nucoa brand margerine. it's the only vegan margerine i know. it's hit or miss whether stores have it.

I second the Nucoa (or Earth Balance works too). There are also a lot of vegan recipes online. :)
