quite proud of these cakes!

so i was asked to watch two very wonderful little girls on saturday, and their mother also asked me to make a cake for her daughter's birthday which was sunday. i went to interview with them on monday this past week, and they took to me right away (which made me feel great). while i was there visiting with them, the mother asked me about the cake. so i asked the young one what she wanted. she suggested a yellow cake with coffee buttercream in the middle and chocolate buttercream on top. i thought that would be a good combination. then she thought about it and asked if the kids would like that. we talked for a bit and i suggested that we make a cake for the adults and a cupcake cake for the kids. i could make part chocolate cupcakes and part yellow cupcakes then frost them all together to make one big cake. both the little girl and the mom thought that was a great idea. then she could taste the yellow cake she wanted and still be able to serve the other kids. we talked about designs for the cake, and she said she likes flowers...orchids specifically. O_o ummmm i dont know of one 8 year old who likes orchids specifically. but...that's what the customer wants...that's what the customer will get.
so...i was engaged. i was to make a yellow cake with coffee buttercream filling (which i had never made) and chocolate buttercream on top AND...a chocolate and yellow cupcake cake with whatever frosting. both to be topped with some form of flowers at least one of which should be an orchid.
Cuppie Cake:

this is how it started out...

Tisa helped with the grass and i put in the stems and leaves

you can make up what these flowers looked like. mostly i just said "hey what will happen if i do this with this tip?" and these are the flowers that came out.

i had thought maybe i could make something that looked like lavender flowers. i think this turned out pretty good!

this will show you the 3D effect of the flowers

i put a 4-leaf-clover in the middle of the stems. dont know if she noticed it or not.

on either side, i put two butterflies...blue on the left...

and purple on the right.

this is the almost finished cake with all the flowers. i eventually wrote happy birthday parker on it and put some heart shapes

this is the final picture with all the items in place.

close up of the writing. dont know if you can see it, but it's purple and blue frosting combined.
i *do* have a picture of the birthday girl with the cake, but since she is not related to me, i choose not to post her picture on an open post. if i get permission from her parents i will post it.
well...those are the pictures of the cuppie cake...
yellow cake:

it looks lighter than it is...chocolate frosting covering the yellow cake already frosted in the middle with coffee frosting.

i was so proud of the frosting being soooooo smooth. i took like 5 pictures of just the smooth cake! hahahaha

similar to the cuppie cake, i wasn't trying to make anything specific here. but to me it looks like an iris...whachutink?

same picture but a little darker. this was a purple flower. sadly...my camera isn't so good at colors.

here i was trying to make a cimbidium orchid. i had a silk orchid i was looking at, but it still didn't turn out the way i wanted.

this one was taken without the flash.

this will (again) show you the 3D-ness of the flowers

the final yellow cake with chocolate frosting. TA DAAAA!
so there they are...my 2 latest cakes. i had no idea what i was going to do until i started creating. i think they turned out lovely.
note for mothers...the cuppie cakes are so very easy to do. if you are interested in learning, i can show you how easy they are. you can also make shapes with them (most shapes anyway) and make them look like certain things. they are the best idea ever because you dont have to worry about this person wanting the corner or this child complaining that she didn't get enough icing, etc. you should always make a little more than you think you will need in case you have parents who want cake also.
