if you would like to have this discussion and let me speak with you and not some invisible person, please feel free to make comment here. i will NOT discuss in an open public community about my differences with ray. if you dont have the balls to come out of hiding then you are not worth my time and energy. if you continue to berate me and ask me questions from behind the cloak of anonymity then i have no reason to have this conversation with you. you ask me questions but are not willing to come forward as who you are. you know who i am...i should know who i'm talking to and who is questioning me. until you come out of hiding and act like a man (or a woman) there is no reason for me to reply.

these are the replies from the baycon community. i'm not going to discuss this more there...no one needs to see it anymore. it's done.
ok i'm going to say this as polite as i can.

first...there is no reason for us to *not* pay the money. every other convention that i've worked i've had to pay. not just the cost of the badge but for the room as well. i'll give you some examples: westercon-- full price $50 membership. pantheacon-- full price $75 membership. furcon-- staff price $20 membership.

none of the conventions mentioned above gave me a room credit for working there. at baycon we are offered a 25% room credit for working the hours that we work which usually amount to 6 or 7 hours per day throughout the weekend. now you all know that i have worked reg for several years now (11 to be exact) and that i work my ass off (ghod knows i've been trying to loose it for years and it still hasn't worked for me). i've been lucky enough to not have to pay for my membership for baycon.

THE FOLLOWING IS JUST MY OPINION ON THIS MATTER AND AS SUCH SHOULD *NOT* BE TAKEN AS FACT...FACTS I'M SURE WILL COME OUT LATER IN THE GAME BY SOMEONE MORE IN THE "KNOW":

(ed note: "we" and "us" in this case would refer to the convention as a whole)
i believe that because of the change in hotels last year we lost quite a few members. some opted to roll over to the following year when we would be back in the south bay, some opted for a refund. due to the change in hotel (my guess is) we are below our budget for the following year. this would cause us to have to find ways of increasing that budget. one of the ways to do that is to charge the staffers a minimal fee (the same as furcon charges) to work. frankly...i dont see an issue with that. every other convention charges for it...why shouldn't baycon. have we (the staffers) become so *used* to our free ride that we kibbitz about having to pay a minimal amount to go to the convention and (at some point) enjoy ourselves? tell me there's not one staffer out there who didn't have a good time at any of the baycons they've attended/worked. i've had several years where i've had fun. there's always a point in the day when we get to go play...even if it is late at night and we're trolling the halls playing at the room parties...we're at least relaxing and having a good time. this past year i was able to enter the masquerade and i even *won* a prize!

so...i honestly dont see why anyone should be jumping ship just because of 20 bux. it costs more than that to take 2 people to a movie! come on y'all...get off your asses and help out the convention that we love so well.

**taking off the staff hat and putting on the J9 hat for a minute here**

ray...i think that you only posted here to stir up some shit. frankly it's annoying and down right rude. might i suggest that you get your facts straight before questioning the way that things are done? if someone has an issue with the price that staff will need to pay to be at the convention, let them go to the staff list and question it. if you would like to be on staff then perhaps you should come to the kick off BBQ and see if someone will take you on. frankly...with all the crap you've pulled in this forum in the past i can tell you that you wouldn't be working with me if i were running reg this year. as it is...i'm not running it, but i am part of the decision making team and i will let them know that my opinion is that they reconsider adding you to the staff should you ask to become a part of it.

so...whoever this "friend" is that you're talking about, please have him send an e-mail to the staff list (because i'm sure that's where "he" got his information) and ask the question. or...second thought...have him come to the staff BBQ on the 11th and ask the questions in person. if this "friend" is imaginary, then this proves my point of you just wanting to stir up some shit and damn it...that's fucking rude.

done.

Post anonymously, I mean. But after reading the comments from lokiz_mom, I'm going to offer an opinion from an outsider who now absolutely wants to STAY an outsider.

I don't know either of you personally. But from reading the comments posted it sounds like the "go pyscho" comment was at least in the ballpark. That response you gave seemed WAY out of line with the question being asked about the pay-to-play. It sounded practically like vendetta - and it gave the impression, whether you wished it to or not, that you would probably extend that vendetta to anyone else who ventured a similar opinion. Thus my anonymous post.

I just attend the con. I've got no stake in this. But with your talk about direct emails or attending meetings being more appropriate, let me ask you this in return: Is the squabbling and bad manners that YOU are showing appropriate for a public forum? Did you really want to do name calling and accusations in public yourself? You make the other guy look calm and rational by comparison. Is that really what you were after?

From an outsiders point of view the initial question was valid. This forum might not have been the BEST place to raise it, and limiting it at first to a simple question about the EXISTENCE of a new policy would have been preferred, but I would still put it down as Acceptable. Your response, frankly, came across as Not Acceptable.

You are under no obligation to discuss it - I was merely presenting you with an unbiased outsider's opinion of how this discussion looked. Your opening sentence about discussing it as politely as you can contrasted rather sharply with the section about putting on your J9 hat. Or maybe it didn't - maybe that J9 section really IS as polite as you can be - and that's a frightening thought in and of itself.

Do you really want random convention attendees (such as myself) to believe that you are incapable of a polite discussion? Do you want such an attendee to cringe at the thought that a person on the "decision making staff" spouts off such vitriol in public? Do you like the thought that I'm literally afraid you might carry on a vendetta if this conversation was not anonymous?

If you're happy with those thoughts, then by all means don't change a thing.

random convention attendees would be willing to come out of the cloak of anonymity and speak with me directly. if you're not able to do that...there's no reason for me to reply.

First they decide they can't afford to pay for professional help, and now they want to charge people to work the convention?
Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha.

Anyone who would agree to that is a dupe.
